This past holiday season, the MetroEast Community Hotline Channel graciously hosted Urban Gleaners on their show. They invited us to highlight our major programs and to talk about the ever pervasive and expanding need in Portland. As we enter into Urban Gleaners’ hungriest months, this publicity splash was incredibly timely.

As many families face empty cupboards and lean refrigerators, so does Urban Gleaners. In January, we see a precipitous drop in the volume of donations coming into our distribution center. In the summer we are flush with the yields from our local farms and organic markets, reaping the benefits of our geography. Nestled in the valley of the green belt, Urban Gleaners is often overrun with delicious delicata squash and sterling specimens of spinach in the summer. However, come winter, we often face empty fridges and bare shelves ourselves.

We’re constantly seeking more donations of food in our endless quest to capture edible surplus from the waste pipeline. Join us in our effort to end hunger!
