Privacy Policy

Last updated: 8/31/2026

Urban Gleaners (“Urban Gleaners,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) respects your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we collect it, how we use and protect it, and the choices you have — including how you can opt in or out of text (SMS) messages from us.

This Policy applies to urbangleaners.org (the “Site”) and to any other way you interact with us, including our Free Food Markets, volunteer and donation forms, email list, and SMS/text messaging program.

Information We Collect

Information you give us directly. When you fill out a form, sign up to volunteer, register for an event, make a donation, contact us, or sign up for our email or SMS list, we may collect your name, email address, phone number, mailing address, and any other information you choose to provide.

Information we collect automatically. When you use the Site, we may automatically collect:

  • Log information — browser type, access times, pages viewed, and IP address.

  • Device information — the type of device and operating system you use to access the Site.

  • Cookies and similar technologies — small files that help us understand how the Site is used and improve your experience. See “Cookies and Tracking Technologies” below.

Information from other sources. If you interact with us through a third-party platform (for example, a Facebook or Instagram post, or an event registration platform), we may receive information from that platform in accordance with its own privacy settings and policies.

How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect to:

  • Operate and improve the Site and our programs;

  • Process donations and volunteer sign-ups, and send related confirmations or receipts;

  • Send you updates about our Free Food Markets, volunteer opportunities, events, and fundraising campaigns, by email or text message, if you’ve opted in;

  • Respond to your questions and requests;

  • Coordinate food donation pickups and Free Food Market logistics;

  • Comply with legal and regulatory requirements; and

  • Otherwise carry out the purpose for which the information was provided.

How We Store and Protect Your Information

We use reasonable administrative and technical safeguards to protect the information we hold, and we limit access to staff and volunteers who need it to do their work on our behalf. We do not store credit card numbers; donation payments are processed through secure third-party payment processors.

How Long We Keep Your Information

We retain personal information for as long as needed to fulfill the purpose it was collected for — for example, donor and volunteer records are kept for as long as needed for our recordkeeping and legal obligations, and SMS opt-in records are kept for as long as you remain subscribed, plus a reasonable period afterward to document consent and opt-outs.

Your Choices and Rights

You may ask us to access, correct, or delete the personal information we hold about you at any time by contacting us at the email address below. We will honor these requests except where we are required to retain information for legal, accounting, or security purposes.

You can unsubscribe from our email list at any time using the link at the bottom of any email. You can opt out of SMS messages at any time — see below.

SMS / Text Messaging Program

If you opt in to receive text messages from Urban Gleaners (through a web form, at an event, or by texting us), you agree to receive SMS messages related to our Free Food Markets, volunteer opportunities, events, and donation appeals. Message frequency varies.

SMS consent and phone numbers collected for SMS communication purposes will not be shared with any third party or affiliates for marketing purposes. We only share this information with the SMS/text messaging service provider we use to send these messages on our behalf, and as required by law.

  • To opt out: reply STOP to any message at any time. You will receive one confirmation message and then no further texts from us. To rejoin, sign up again as you did the first time.

  • For help: reply HELP to any message, or contact us at info@urbangleaners.org or 503-226-8061.

  • Message and data rates may apply. Contact your wireless carrier with questions about your plan.

Sharing of Information

Other than as described above for SMS, we may share information:

  • With vendors and service providers who need it to carry out work on our behalf (for example, our email platform, payment processor, or SMS provider), under obligations to protect it and not use it for their own marketing purposes;

  • If required by law, regulation, or legal process;

  • To protect the rights, property, or safety of Urban Gleaners, our staff, volunteers, or others; or

  • With your consent.

We do not sell personal information. We may share aggregated or de-identified information that does not identify you.

Cookies and Tracking Technologies

We may use cookies and similar technologies to understand how visitors use the Site and to improve it. Most browsers let you block or delete cookies; doing so may affect some Site features. We may use analytics tools (such as Google Analytics) to understand Site traffic.

Children’s Privacy

Our Site is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will post any changes here and update the “Last updated” date above.
